Three Core Pillars

Each episode will be rooted in three core pillars: Public Learning, Representation and Place. Episodes will center the host and at least one guest to learn from and/or with about a central activity, the location of the activity, and the ways in which BIPOC identities intersect with outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship.

Public Learning

The practice of documenting and sharing a learning process. The host will not act as an expert of place, outdoor recreation skills or environmental stewardship, but will lead with curiosity and vulnerability to bring the audience along on the learning journey.

Place

Media content will explore the unique social and environmental narratives of each place being recreated on.

“That thing we call a place is the intersection of many changing forces passing through, whirling around, mixing, dissolving, and exploding in a fixed location. To write about a place is to acknowledge that phenomena often treated separately—ecology, democracy, culture, storytelling, urban design, individual life histories and collective endeavors—coexist. They coexist geographically, spatially, in place, and to understand a place is to engage with braided narratives and sue generous explorations.” – Rebecca Solnit, “The Encyclopedia of Trouble and Spaciousness”.

Supplementary content can include action items to learn more about ongoing engagement and advocacy issues pertaining to each episode. For example: supplementary content for an episode that takes place along Lake Superior could include links to support or learn more about Midwest Indigenous Immersion Network or Alliance for Great Lakes.

Representation

While the primary focus of the content will center the representation of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) in the outdoors, it should also aim to include representation of expertise in different activities. (E.G. BIPOC guests who are kayaking novices and/or BIPOC guests with kayaking expertise). Additionally, representation for the purposes of this show can include: gender and sexual orientation, body shape and size, disabled and able-bodied, faith/spirituality etc.
