For more than 25 years, the Telephone Pioneers have been volunteering at WGVU Public Media. Once a month, they would come to our offices and help us prepare mailings and stuff envelopes. They have also volunteered to assist with membership drives, auction and other WGVU events.
The Telephone Pioneers started helping when we were a small station on the Allendale campus, and they followed us to our new location on the downtown campus in the late 1980s. They are all retired Michigan Bell/General Bell Telephone Operators. Over the years, original members have left the group while new members have joined. We had husband and wife teams as well as sisters and co-workers who graciously gave their time to assist us.
Although we rely on numerous volunteers to help out at all of our community and membership events, we really have depended on the Telephone Pioneers to keep our day to day operations going for many, many years.
Sadly, 2012 was their last year of commitment to us as a group helping out with our monthly mailings. We will miss them. However, they have expressed an interest in continuing in other areas as a group and individually.
